Crossing Catalonia with dinosaursThe Cretaceous of the Pyrenees The Itinerary crosses the GEOPARK (UNESCO) CONCA DE TREMP-MONTSEC.
The Cretaceous of the Pyrenees
The Pyrenees contain numerous dinosaur sites, dating to the end of the Mesozoic era. This fact causes them to be the last dinosaurs that populated the planet. The route starts at the site of Fumanya (Berguedà) and crosses the territory from east to west. We will pass through Coll de Nargó (Alt Urgell), Basturs and Isona (Pallars Jussà), through the GEOPARK (UNESCO) CONCA DE TREMP-MONTSEC. As in all our routes you will enjoy many activities in order to discover the region and its people, with visits to a Romanesque church and a winery and, of course, Km0 gastronomy.

DAY 1: THE SACRED MOUNTAIN
Pick up the group at Barcelona or at its airport. It will take about three hours to our destination. On the way we will stop for a few minutes along the road to view Montserrat, the sacred mountain of Catalonia, to admire its characteristic monoliths. The Montserrat mountain range is located to the east of the Llobregat river. Its characteristic and spectacular formations make it unique. Its highest point is the summit of Sant Jeroni, at 1,236.4 m. Throughout the millennia, the isostatic and tectonic movements, climate changes and erosion have ended up shaping an abrupt relief, with large walls and rounded blocks of pink conglomerate and clay. Inside it, the erosion of karstic type has created caves and torrents. It was declared a natural park in 1987 to guarantee its conservation. Overnight in Berga (H ***).
DAY 2: WALKING BETWEEN GIANTS
70 million years ago, giant dinosaur herbivores left their footprints in the coastal zone. Today we can observe them in the paleontological sites of the north of the Berguedà region. We will visit the Fumanya Interpretation Center, an open-air mining operation that was carried out between 1975 and 1986 that exposed an impressive paleontological site with more than 3,500 dinosaur tracks. Footprints date to more than 65 million years to the end of the Cretaceous period that make it the most important in the world.
In the afternoon we will continue on foot through the gentle Queralt roundabout which focuses on the different elements of the landscape to contemplate this exceptional viewpoint. In addition, we will discover how its presence has conditioned human settlement and economic activities. The route allows us to contemplate structures and geological materials that show us the phenomena that led to the formation of the Pyrenean mountain range. Night in Berga (H ***).
DAY 3: THE REPRODUCTION OF DINOSAURS
In the town of Coll de Nargó we will travel 70 million years ago. We will discover how dinosaurs were reproduced, thanks to the latest study of their fossils and, especially, those recovered in this area, one of the most important sites in the world for eggs and nests. In the Dinosphere museum we will observe the largest dinosaur nest found in Europe.
We will visit the church of Sant Climent, from the Romanesque period. The current building was built at the end of the 11th or 12th centuries in the place of an earlier church, which preserves the plan of the plant next to noon and the bell tower. Overnight at Terradets Hotel (H ***), in the town of Cellers.
DAY 4: THREE TYPES OF FOSSILS, THREE DINOSAUR SPECIES
In the surroundings of Basturs we will visit deposits of different fossils: footprints (Llau de Costa), bones (Les Torres) and eggs (Basturs-2) that show us the species that inhabited the area. In the afternoon we will visit the Museum of Isona and Conca Dellà, where you can see the fossils found in the area and study a giant copy of the end of the Cretaceous, guest star of the Discovery Channel. Then we will sample the wine from the region at the Vila-Corona winery. Overnight at the Terradets hotel (H ***).
DAY 5: ORCAU, THE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN THE SEA AND THE EARTH
Near the village of Orcau we will visit the important Orcau-2 site. Here we will see dozens of dinosaur footprints, preserved on the surface of an extensive layer of limestone. This layer was formed at the bottom of a shallow lake, very close to the sea, in which the vegetation abounded. The footprints conserved in Orcau-2 were produced by a group of great herbivorous and quadruped dinosaurs that are known as titanosaurs. These animals could reach gigantic sizes and had an extraordinarily long neck and tail; the head was, however, very small, especially in relation to the size of the rest of the body. We
will also observe an impressive reef formed by strangers: the rudists. Return trip to Barcelona or its aeroport where our route ends.
- Guiding: The trip is guided by the geologist, Lluís Ardèvol i Oró, with more than 25 years of experience.

"I have been on a couple of excursions with Pyrenees Trips in Catalonia and would like to express my appreciation to the guide who was very professional, showing great patience and in-depth knowledge of the region (geologically, historically and culturally). Our group continually relied on his invaluable expertise in order to make for an extremely enjoyble excursion "
"For those who like the history of the earth and enjoy the landscape and understand it, it is essential to have a good guide that interprets the rocks and the footsteps of evolution. Without guidance, it can hardly be understood"
